4 Bitcoin-Newbies: What I have learned about BTC in 4 months

Hi guys,
I was introduced to Bitcoins last September. I didn't know anything about that and I started studying more about that.
I also found this forum and learned A LOT from you guys, so, to thank you all and to give back, I thought about doing a small summary of what I have learned so maybe new guys can find this helpful.
I will post a lot of links from outside and to my own posts, so people with the same doubts that I had can look for the answers that I got there and maybe that may answer their question too.
I learned: In September 2012, the very first thing I learned was from this video (like many of us) :
http://youtu.be/Um63OQz3bjo and this website: http://www.weusecoins.com
My friend introduced me to my first wallet and my first pool: http://bitcoin.org/ and http://bitminter.com/
I still didn't know what I was doing.
This amazing post resolve 99% of your doubts: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=9430.0
At the end September I found out that mining as we know it (or as I just knew) was about to end thanks to the ASIC machines. I didn't know what mining was and less idea of what ASIC was. So I started reading about that and I find many companies like Butterfly Labs, Avalon and BTCFPGA (http://bitcoinmagazine.com/tag/asic/)
I learned how awesome this forum is, willing to help a new guy like me
I was still learning how to mine, so I asked in this forum about that (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=114723.msg1236829#msg1236829) and they told me about pools, mining and I ended upgrading my graphic card (you can compare the speed of mining here: https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison and you can calculate how many bitcoins here: http://tpbitcalc.appspot.com/)
I found out all the pools out there (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=104664.0)
In October I was looking for rigs to mine (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=114823.msg1238027#msg1238027) because I found this video: http://youtu.be/eLt8Se3vVNg
Then I didn't understand why pay fees when mining, but this forum was even greater than what I thought https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=115260.msg1242456#msg1242456
So once I learned about mining, I download GUIminer and I started mining in 3 pools at the same time (https://bitcointalk.org/?topic=3878.0)
After 40 days I mined my first bitcoin YAY! now, I wanted to know what I can do with that and I found places to buy with bitcoins like www.bitmit.net
I wanted to control my mining from my cellphone and I found Bitcare very useful (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.cryptcoins.btcare&hl=en), and also Bitcoin Wallet to have a new wallet in your phone (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.schildbach.wallet&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImRlLnNjaGlsZGJhY2gud2FsbGV0Il0).
I wanted to buy more bitcoins, didn't know where. Dwolla https://www.dwolla.com/ and Mt.Gox https://mtgox.com/ were there for me. I found out that Dwolla is a pain in the ass. I had to wait 3 weeks to verify me and 3-5 days every time to make a deposit. But besides that, it works...althought I found this today: http://codinginmysleep.com/dwolla-begins-suspensions/
People who likes bitcoins don't usually likes PayPal
I also found places where they give bitcoins away...for free! http://makebitcoinsfast.com/ and http://earnbitcoin.wikidot.com/
I was new and happy until I found what a block is and how it dropped from 50BTC to 25BTC https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Blocks and http://blockchain.info/
You can know when the new block will happen: http://bitcoinclock.com/
More companies started to use bitcoins like WordPress (http://www.forbes.com/sites/jonmatonis/2012/11/16/whats-your-bitcoin-strategy-wordpress-now-accepts-bitcoin-across-the-planet/). You can even buy a house with btc! http://bitcoinmagazine.com/where-to-spend-your-bitcoins/
Cool sites that I still don't understand like: http://cognitivemining.com/ or http://bitcoinstatus.rowit.co.uk/
The biggest wallet so far had more than 613,000 BTC and its own site (http://1dkybekt5s2gdtv7aqw6rqepavnsryhoym.com/)
You can watch how bitcoins are going higher or lower in sites like here: http://bitcoinwatch.com/ and http://bitcoin.clarkmoody.com/
That a guru of Gold and Silver, is accepting Bitcoins in his web: http://mogamboguru.blogspot.com/
They have more names than just bitcoins... Sub-units of a bitcoin such asmillibitcoins ("Millies") or microbitcoins ("Mikes"). The Bitcoin protocol uses a base unit of one hundred-millionth of a Bitcoin ("a Satoshi")
What 2013 has in store for bitcoins: http://bitcoinmagazine.com/the-next-year-in-bitcoin-what-2013-has-in-store/
Some companies are afraid of bitcoins like apple and why: www.forbes.com/sites/jonmatonis/2012/06/13/why-apple-is-afraid-of-bitcoin/
You can help others by crowd founding with btcs: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=118458.0
You can bet anything: http://betsofbitco.in/ or http://bitbet.us/
And also short cut your wallet: http://payb.tc/
Hitler sells alls bitcoins: http://youtu.be/alc0gG0u48M
That if the bitcoin drops to $4 (it was my dream )... 82% of the people would buy all the btc they could https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137249.0
Casinos will make money....ALWAYS, any currency, any country: www.forbes.com/sites/jonmatonis/2013/01/22/bitcoin-casinos-release-2012-earnings/
There is wikipedia about bitcoins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitcoin) and there is a wikipedia only of bitcoins: (https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Main_Page)
Blogs keep growing to understand better about bitcoins: http://www.thebitcointrader.com/
I learned the hard way that if you have several wallets in your Bitcoin Wallet in your phone, it can crash and lose money. Be careful. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137785.msg1468748#msg1468748
You can have multiples wallets in your computer thanks to: https://multibit.org/
I thought a fork was for eating, but there are more https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=136802.msg1457287#msg1457287
There is no flaws in bitcoins: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=136740.msg1456910#msg1456910
Also, if you sign your account of the forum with your wallet, your nickname would be attached to it, always: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=137667.msg1467500#msg1467500
You must create a SECURE wallet: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=17240.0
And that's it so far. I'm still learning but I can see how much I have learned in just 4 months. I got my wallets secured, with many bitcoins and waiting for an asic.
I hope this post can help anybody.
Thank you guys!
All the best.

Bitcoining: a simple guide to get you started

Continuum pool is recommended over deepbit, read this post to use that instead. Instructions are virtually the same.
https://deepbit.net/
Sign up for an account. Choose proportional mode.
Download this and this and this.
First one you just extract. Second one is your mining program. Third one is your wallet where you keep track of all your bitcoins.
So you have a deepbit account, right? Well anyways after everything is extracted and installed open up your bitcoin.exe. There is a long string of text near the top in a box. That is your address. That is how you get paid and pay others. Copy that and then goto your account and paste it into the "Your bitcoin address for receiving rewards" box. Save settings.
Now go back to your account and click create worker. Set the worker's login tail to 0 and the password to anything you will remember. Leave payout as proportional and click save settings.
Open up GuiMiner. File>new other miner and navigate to where you extracted that third link(the one with 4 .exes). Select rpcminer-cuda.exe for your new other miner. Name it CUDA. In the guiminer tab for this new miner(the CUDA tab) set the server to other.
Host: pit.deepbit.net
Port: 8332
Username: [email protected]_0 you must add the _0
Password: The password of your created worker
Extra flags: Only needed for more than 1 graphics card, if this is true, read part 2
Go into guiminer and do file > save settings. Now click start mining. The number of MHash/s is completely dependent on your graphics card's power. I have 2 cards that get about 30 MH/s each. To check your mined coins go here.
Okay, so now just a bit of explaining. Your deepbit account is merely a holding place for your coins. To actually spend them you need to payout to your address. To do this goto your account and click the Payment link. You can only pay out if you have over 0.01 BTC. When you pay out it will appear in your bitcoin.exe, it takes a while the first time and every payment after that it is near instantaneous. Once it is in your bitcoin.exe congratulations, you now have bitcoins to spend. To spend them you just get the address of the person who you are sending them to then click the send button on bitcoin.exe, put in their address and the amount.
Also, goto C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Bitcoin (if you're on windows7) and backup your wallet.dat file. That is your wallet. It has all of your money. Don't delete it.
Part 2, multiple graphics cards.
I have 2 graphics cards so setup took a bit more for me, if you have only 1 ignore this section.
Only a few things you need to do. Go to your deepbit account and click "create new worker". For worker login tail set it to 1. Set the password to something you will remember. Leave payment proportional. Save settings. Now go to your guiminer. In your original CUDA tab with your username as [email protected]_0 go into the extra flags and put in "-gpu=0". Now go to file>new other worker and choose the rpcminer-cuda.exe as before. Name it CUDA2. In the CUDA2 tab have the following settings.
Server: other
Host: pit.deepbit.net
Port: 8332
Username: [email protected]_1 must have the _1
Password: The password you set when you made the new worker on deepbit.
Extra flags: -gpu=1
So you end up with 2 tabs, a CUDA tab that has all the same settings except the email ends in _0 and the extra flags as -gpu=0 and a CUDA2 tab with the email ending in _1 and extra flags are -gpu=1.
File>save settings in guiminer and click start mining on both tabs.
A final piece of advice. This will use your GPU heavily, if you are gaming or anything else and notice that video is lagging go to the tray in the bottom right, find the GuiMiner icon and right click it and close it. Do not click stop mining in guiminer.exe. This always crashes my computer and will likely crash yours. Just close the program from the tray.

Slush's pool, can anyone simplify the whole reward system?

Hi! I'm kinda new at mining bitcoins since I switched from BTC Guild to Slush's pool and the whole reward system got me confused a bit.
I'm using GUIMiner and I have about an average of 570Mhash/s (Radeon 7970 GPU). I read through some threads on reddit and other forums on how does the whole pool work but I still don't understand it, I've been mining for the past two days and my Unconfirmed rewards are stuck on 0.00000919 BTC as well as my total reward. Meanwhile my confirmed rewards are still on 0. (http://imgur.com/xoLZ0Yb) The estimated reward changes obviously but my question is why am I not getting any confirmed rewards?
EDIT: Here's also a screenshot of my GUIMiner, please tell me if I have anything set up wrong - http://prntscr.com/2tusck

Informative post about Feathercoin

Seeing how this Subreddit is lacking any sort of info on Feathercoins and the lack of community support we have, I have decided to start a post that would inform newbies about Feathercoin and seasoned vets on the best places to trade.
Feathercoin:
It is a Crypto Currency that was started by Peter Bushnell. It is a clone of Litecoin (This coin was inspired by Bitcoin). The Feathercoin network generates coins at a decreasing rate. It will generate about 336 million coins which is 16 times more than that of Bitcoin and 4 times more than that of Litecoin. Currently about 25 million coins have been generated.
Network hashrates, Pools, Solo mining:
Currently a mid end system comprising of 7870 or 7970 will get you abot 400 to 700 kh/s. That means that in a given day you will be mining about 7 to 13 Feathercoins on current difficulty level. However If you mine alone that is solo mining, the probability of you finding a block is hard and it may take a while before you make a coin. To counter this people have started making pools to increase the chances of finding blocks. There are many pools that allow you to have multiple workers so you can setup multiple systems and mine at your leisure. Currently some of the popular pools are:
http://www.fcpool.com/
http://give-me-coins.com/
http://www.wemineftc.com/
http://fc.ltcoin.net/
https://ftc.d2.cc/
For a full list of mining pools: http://coinpools.sdfg.org/ftc
It is highly recommended to join a pool to make mining profitable. Look at the pools posted above, look at their fee structure, their payout and make an informed decision on which pool to join.
Hardware and Mining:
Feathercoin utilizes scrypt based mining that is you can use your GPU (the Graphics card inside your system) to mine them. AMD Cards are highly recommended as they output higher hashrates as compared to Nvidia. To give you an idea of the difference a 7870 ghz edition mines at about 375 kh/s whereas a Nvidia 780ti would mine at about 224 to 300 kh/s. If you are seriously considering in investing in this venture it would be best to buy a rig that supports 6 GPU's and buy either the 7950 or the 280x as they have considerably higher hash rates and are affordable to say the least. Something one should be aware of is that mining produces a lot of heat as your system is basically running at full capacity and therefore needs a lot of cooling. People usually build rigs in the open (no case) and use household fans to cool them. Also another thing that is common is to use PCIe risers as they allow greater spacing between GPU cards and effectively help in dissipating heat. Mining uses a lot of electricity so it is best to use a schedule to mine or if electricity is cheap then 6 7950's running 24 hours a day would cost you about 12 to 18 dollars in electricity a month, maybe more depending on where you live. The software to use for mining are Cgminer (https://litecointalk.org/index.php?topic=6925.0), guiminer scrypt (http://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php?topic=961.0) and cudaminer for Nvidia cards. I would advise against Cpu mining as that is not profitable and will simply weigh you down. Invest 250 to 350 dollars in a good AMD GPU and you will be mining much more effectively.
Trading:
There are many places where one can trade Feathercoins but only a few of them offer FTC/USD exchange. Btc-e (https://btc-e.com/exchange/ftc_btc). Is one of the biggest cryptocoin trading exchanges, it does not offer USD exchange for Feathercoins as of yet but allows you to exchange for Bitcoins. Crypto-trade (https://www.crypto-trade.com/trade/ftc_btc), this trading exchange allows you to trade against the USD making it more favourable to miners however there is currently a lack of volume for FTC as of writing. Other exchanges like Cryptsy, Bter and coins-e are all good but they are heavily dependent on Bitcoins and Litecoins for now.
My thoughts
Feathercoin is fairly new and its gaining momentum, once big exchanges start listing it against the USD, the venture will become more profitable. For now it is advisable to mine as many as you can and sit on them till value improves or if you have a mining rig that is mining at 22000 kh/s (this will get you about 500 feathercoins a day) then mine the shit out of them and trade them for Btc for profit although I would recommend against this as it it reduces the value of feathercoin. Many exchanges allow you to deposit money via international wire transfers however the minimum is 2000 dollars so keep that in mind before investing real money into this venture. There are alternatives like paypal and okpay that are also accepted but not a lot of people have accounts on those so signup for a website that suits your situation.
One last ting we all need to do is spread awareness about Feathercoin, It is a miners coin and the difficulty right now makes it so much more interesting to mine. I will update this page with more information and will answer questions if any to the best of my knowledge. Happy mining

EDIT : I realized some of you might have NVIDIA GPU's and are hesitant on getting AMD. Never fear for there is a solution. If you have a motherboard that supports two or more GPU's that is you have more than one PCIe slots than follow these instructions:
If you intend to game on your system while you are mining then put the NVIDIA card in PCI slot one and buy an AMD card and put it in slot 2. Now install the drivers in the order Nvidia first reboot and then Amd second reboot. You do not need to plug in HDMI to your AMD card just leave it as it is. Now download gpu miner scrypt and select from the list your AMD card and start mining, its that easy. At night if you want to squeeze in more kh/s then run cudaminer and let it mine alongside your AMD. The best part about this is that you can be mining 24/7 on your AMD card and you will not experience any system slow down while gaming or watching movies. Remember to have atleast two workers workers created so you can mine parallel. If you already have an NVIDIA card then just install your AMD card and install AMD drivers and reboot and run guiminer scrypt. At times you might run into the issue of guiminer not starting, just delete it and re install it and it should work fine in 98% of the cases. This is for those who do not want to invest in a completely new system and would rather use their existing system. You can use cgminer as well but remember the order in cgminer starts from 0 not 1 so if NVIDIA is in slot 1 then it is -d0 -g0 and AMD will be -d1 -g1

-Newb Help-It Bitcoin mining worth it? If so, how?

I recently got done putting together a new gaming rig (props to buildapc, everyone should check it out),and I was looking for something to do with all this power when I'm not gaming with it.
I started looking into Bitcoins about a week ago, and I've got to say I like the idea, mostly because it appeals heavily to my libertarian sensibilities.
Ive read that you guys had some sort of huge crash a while back, and now bitcoins are barely worth dirt, true?
What do you guys do with bitcoins once you've mined them? How efficient is it is you're selling them for USD?
The biggest roadblock I have to getting started mining though is a software issue. For the life of me, I can't get the Guiminer to detect my 6950. I've spent the last two hours on forums searching for the answer, downloaded updated opencl drivers and everything, but it just won't work, HELP? If I don't get it to work soon, I'm probably just going to give up out of frusteration :-\
Thanks in advance for all the information and (hopefully) help!

Hello, I am new to Bitcoin Mining and am having a little trouble. I have installed GuiMiner and installed all the necessary drivers for my ATI Radeon graphics card several times. Guiminer is working but only detects the CPU and I have been looking at forums all day and installing and uninstalling drivers and nothing has worked. I am using laptop could that be a problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there any information I can give you to help diagnose?

Seeing a 2% decrease after switching to new GUIminer

I downloaded the 2011-7-01 guiminer build from here and now I am seeing a 2% decrease. I averaged about 295 Mhash before and now I am averaging around 288 Mhash.
This is with 2GB XFX 6950 flashed to a 6970.
I am not running it with any extra flags now, but I wasn't before either so I don't know if that has something to do with it. All I did to switch the two was delete the guiminer folder I had before, download the new version extract it and run it from there.
Other posts I saw reference the opposite effect, a 2-5% increase in speed. Has anyone else had this problem?

Miner doesn't see GPU.

Hey guys,
Im just getting into bitmining. Im running Win 7 64-bit.
My setup is:
Intel Q6600 2,4 Ghz.
4GB RAM
AMD Radeon HD6870
Miner:GUIminer
I've followed this setup I found online: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?271701-How-to-fund-your-cruncher-s-utility-bill-OR-how-to-make-money-using-bitcoin
But after installing the miner and the AMD APP SDK (Version 2.9-Windows-641 - The latest on the AMD site). I dont see my GPU listed in the miner.
I've checked the FAQ section of GUIminer and they suggest using an other version of AMD APP SDK. I've tried V2.6, V2.7 and V2.8. none of them seem to work for me.
Now in the tutorial they suggest running V2.4 for my card. But I cant seem to find that one in the AMD archives. Do one of you maybe have the file and might be able to upload it somewhere for me or is there any other things that I can do in order to get my miner working on the GPU ?

Can't start mining

Hey everyone, I just recently decided to get into mining on my PC while I wasn't using it. I've installed GUIMiner and signed on to slush's pool, but every time I try to start mining, I get something similar to
" authorization failed with :*******@stratum.bitcoin.cz:3333, IO errors - 1, tolerance 2 "
I've looked through forums, and other people have had the same problem, but I haven't found any solutions. Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
EDIT: I figured it out, I had installed my bitcoin client to D:\ but the default path in GUIMiner is C:\ I'll leave this up in case someone else has the same problem

Cgminer errors with AMD Radeon HD 7450

Having trouble with GPU mining dogecoin. Here are my specs: AMD quad core CPU, 8GB RAM, and AMD Radeon HD 7450 1GB (an OEM HP graphics card, basically a rebranded HD 6450). I have tried Cgminer and GUIminer scrypt alpha. Cgminer has errors shown below, and GUIminer scrypt gets stuck at “Starting…” Also have installed AMD Catalyst 14.1 and OpenCL SDK. Having no problems with CPUminer. I strangely have no problems GPU mining bitcoin with GUIminer (non scrypt version). Read many forum threads about these errors and followed multiple guides with no luck.
This is my cmd output from launching cgminer 3.7.2:
[2014-02-13 20:53:43] Started cgminer 3.7.2

Launching Cgminer with the following: cgminer.exe --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://pool.dogechain.info:3333 -u username.worker -p password
I cannot think of what else to try. Thanks in advance.

5830 w/ phoenix stuck at Connecting...

posted this on bitcoin forums but nobody responded... I'll try my friendly reddit counterparts!
Specs:
OS: Win7 64 Ult CPU: AMD 940 quad 3.0GHz RAM: 4GB DDR2 Vid: Sapphire 5830 Extreme 1GB OC: MSI Afterburner 970 core/ 500 mem Miner: GUIMiner 2011-07-01 using built in OpenCL with these flags: -v -w128 -f60 temps: easily under 70C with fan at least around 70-80%
manually did the 3% Ma-function patch to the appropriate kernels.
With this setup I get 285/295 Mhash/s which I don't think is too bad. However I can't seem to get phoenix to work. I tried at first just to setup a new miner and use the phoenix.exe that came with GUIminer, but all it does is say "Connecting..." and never gets connected. I tried replacing the phoenix related files with whatever is on github for 1.5 with the same results.
Any pointers on how I can get phoenix working to see if I get better hash rates for my current setup? Thanks
